HOW MUCH DOES A TATTOO COST IN LINCOLN? UNDERSTANDING TATTOO PRICING
One of the most common questions we're asked at Voodoo Ink is:
"How much will my tattoo cost?"
It's a perfectly reasonable question. Whether you're getting your first tattoo or adding to an existing collection, knowing what you're likely to spend is important.
The difficulty is that tattoo pricing isn't always as straightforward as people expect.
Two tattoos that look similar in size can have very different prices, and there's considerably more involved in producing a professional tattoo than simply putting ink into skin.
So, let's explain how tattoo pricing works and what you're actually paying for.

WHAT IS THE MINIMUM TATTOO CHARGE AT VOODOO INK?
At Voodoo Ink in Lincoln, our minimum tattoo charge is £40.
This covers the basic costs involved in setting up and carrying out even the smallest tattoo.
Every client requires a properly prepared working area, sterile single-use needles, ink, protective barriers, cleaning products and the other consumables necessary to maintain professional hygiene standards.
Those costs exist whether your tattoo takes ten minutes or several hours.
A small tattoo might require very little time actually tattooing, but the preparation, equipment and cleaning procedures are still necessary.
Our £40 minimum allows us to maintain those standards regardless of the size of the tattoo.
WHY DO TATTOOS OF SIMILAR SIZE COST DIFFERENT AMOUNTS?
Size is only one factor in determining the cost of a tattoo.
Imagine two tattoos, both approximately four inches across.
One is a simple outline design with minimal detail. The other contains intricate linework, detailed shading and multiple colours.
Although they're physically the same size, the second design may require considerably more time, concentration and technical work.
Tattoo pricing therefore takes several things into account:
Size: Larger tattoos generally require more working time.
Detail: Intricate designs can take longer than simpler pieces.
Colour and shading: Different techniques require different amounts of work.
Placement: Some areas of the body are more challenging to tattoo than others.
Design preparation: Custom artwork may require additional planning and drawing.
Existing tattoos: Cover-ups and reworks often involve additional design challenges.
This is why giving an accurate price without properly understanding the tattoo can be difficult.
ARE SMALL TATTOOS ALWAYS CHEAPER?
Not necessarily.
A small, highly detailed tattoo can sometimes be more technically demanding than a much larger, simpler design.
Fine lines, small lettering and intricate patterns require precision.
It's also important to consider how a design will age.
Sometimes a client requests a tattoo at a size that simply won't allow the detail to remain clear over the years.
In those situations, we'd rather explain the limitations and recommend a more suitable size than produce something that may not age particularly well.
The objective should always be a tattoo that looks good now and continues to look good in the future.
WHY DOES AN ARTIST'S EXPERIENCE AFFECT THE PRICE?
Tattooing is a skilled profession, and experience matters.
An experienced artist brings years of practical knowledge about skin, design, placement, technique and how tattoos heal and age.
That knowledge can be particularly valuable when dealing with complicated placements, existing tattoos, cover-ups or detailed custom work.
At Voodoo Ink, Matt has more than 18 years of professional tattooing experience, working across a wide range of styles.
That experience isn't simply about being able to produce a design. It's also about recognising what will work, what won't, and how to achieve a result that suits the individual client.
If you're choosing an artist, we'd always recommend looking beyond price alone.

IS THE CHEAPEST TATTOO ALWAYS THE BEST VALUE?
Everyone has a budget, and there's absolutely nothing wrong with considering cost.
However, a tattoo is something you're likely to wear for the rest of your life.
Choosing an artist purely because they're the cheapest can sometimes prove expensive in the long run, particularly if the tattoo eventually needs reworking, covering or laser treatment.
That doesn't mean the most expensive artist is automatically the best either.
Good value comes from finding an artist whose work you trust, who understands what you're trying to achieve and who provides a professional service at a fair price.
A good tattoo should be an investment in something you're genuinely happy to wear.
WHY WE PREFER TO PRICE TATTOOS INDIVIDUALLY
At Voodoo Ink, we prefer to understand exactly what a client wants before giving a firm quotation.
A design that looks straightforward in a photograph may need adjusting to suit the body, while another design may be simpler to produce than it initially appears.
We consider the size, detail, placement and overall requirements before discussing the cost.
This approach allows us to give clients a more realistic price rather than simply guessing.
It also gives us the opportunity to suggest adjustments that may help a design work better without unnecessarily increasing the cost.
CAN YOU GET A TATTOO ON A BUDGET?
Absolutely.
You don't necessarily need a large budget to get a good tattoo.
Sometimes simplifying a design, adjusting its size or choosing a different approach can make it more affordable while still producing an excellent result.
The important thing is being open about what you'd like and what you're comfortable spending.
We'd much rather have that conversation at the beginning than leave someone feeling pressured into something they can't afford.
And if your ideal tattoo is going to cost more than your current budget allows, there's nothing wrong with waiting and saving for the piece you really want.
